{2013} senior rep model search

hey hey class of 2013, this post is just for you...i am officially kicking off my senior rep model search for the upcoming year and you could reap some sweet rewards...i will be accepting up to two models from each school, girls and guys! so guys, don't be shy...we know you like having pictures of yourself too....because i am only accepting up to 2 models from each school, spaces are limited and not everyone that responds will be accepted. so, don't wait!!!

now to answer some questions about the program...

what is a senior rep?

i will pick up to two lucky reps per school...they will receive a FREE 90-minute portrait session ($75 value) in exchange for telling your classmates about the services provided by gypsy tree photography!

if I get picked, how do I spread the word?

you will receive free custom senior rep cards using photos from your shoot to hand out to friends, you will receive a 4x8 accordion album packed full of your pics and you will also receive free digital proofs to share...do you have a facebook page? put your digital proofs on there and link the album up to my website...the more you can promote gypsy tree photography, the better for YOU!

what do you receive for being a senior rep model?

you will receive a free shoot ($75 value), rep cards and digital proofs...in addition to that, each person who books a senior portrait session based on your referral earns you a $20 print credit...there is no limit to how much you can earn, if you have enough referrals you could get your senior package for virtually free. BUT the senior must mention you when booking their session for you to earn rewards.

is there a catch?

if you are selected to be a rep and you don’t refer a minimum of two seniors to me by March 2013, you will be required to pay your $75 session fee. but i am totally confident that with a little work on your part on facebook and handing out your rep cards, this shouldn’t be a problem at all!!!

when would you do my portrait session?

your photos would be taken this spring or early summer.

my photos are all taken on location...my style is not your traditional portrait photography, so feel free to suggest locations that fit your style and scream "THIS IS ME"...some great places to shoot are local rivers, parks, in the middle of fields, farms, lakes, railroad tracks, ball fields, junk yards, in town and almost anywhere else you can think of...this is about YOU and my goal is to capture your personality in your pictures.

it's hard to believe, but fall is here and the holidays are just around the corner. i’ve set aside 2 days this fall to allow for Christmas mini sessions! these shoots are basically just a scaled down version of our full portrait session. our mini session includes 30 minutes of shooting and 10 fully-edited proofs given to you in an online, password protected album.

saturday’s wedding was another amazing wedding that i had the pleasure of being apart of...a beach theme, expecting bridesmaids, a sandbox at the reception for the littles and a super cute beach wedding cake...take a little peek into the day i spent capturing the love between cathy + craig...

this is one of my fav images...although there are so many it's hard for me to pick just one!

how cute is it that BOTH bridesmaids are expecting and due within a week of each other...

all of the amazing beach details...LOVE that! and i thought it was an amazingly great idea to have a sandbox, coloring books and beach balls at the reception for the littles to play with...

beautiful SWAN ♥

most of you that know me on a personal level know how close adoption is to my heart as i was adopted at 3 days old...i had such an amazing childhood and now, as an adult, have found my birthparents and have a great relationship with them as well...i love my story and am so thankful that my life took the path that it did...i've always felt drawn to give back to the adoption world somehow but wasn't quite sure how God would work that into my life...

this past november i received an email from the coordinator of the Pennsylvania Heart Gallery, a traveling exhibit of portraits of some of Pennsylvania’s waiting children...she asked if i would be interested in a volunteer opportunity with SWAN (Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network)...they were recruiting more volunteer photographers across the state to meet some of these amazing kids and produce beautiful portraits for the website...i was honored, touched and blown away at how God had, once again, brought the beauty of adoption back into my life...

i, of course, said yes and am now happy to announce i am a SWAN volunteer photographer...and i cannot tell you how much i look forward to this in my future...

i had a fabulous shoot last weekend with natache...she managed to rock the shoot even through the 500 mph winds...i'm fairly sure at one point i saw dorothy blow past in her house.

natache was amazing and even humored me with a water shot...keep in mind it was only around 55 degrees out, the water was freezing AND the wind was ridiculous...she was such a good sport :)

ya'all know i'm a complete sucker for a sweet little pup...natache brought her pup molly along and i instantly fell in love...

Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?

Digital technology is brilliant. The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and amazing amounts of control for the photographer, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur. With flexibility comes a price though. Camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’ lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into all of this.

Even though you pay $1.99 for a print at your local drugstore and paying for film is pretty much a thing of the past (although you still pay for memory) you may be wondering why you may pay upwards of $40, 50, 70, 90 for a custom photography print. Some photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

“How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at the local drug store?”

The answer is multifaceted and has a lot to do with the time, aforementioned equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer, expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

TIME of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

Approaching it from a time standpoint, for instance let’s imagine if you will that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love and that is travelling an hour to your on location session. Time break down:

~session prep time (30 mins – 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)
~one hour travel time TO session
~15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home
~90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject
~one hour travel time FROM session
~30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer
~30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images
~2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images
~1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering
~2-3 hours time with client for ordering images
~1 hour sorting through and checking order
~30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery
~30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped
~any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

As you can see, average client time for a session ranges from just under 13 hours to 19 hours dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to your session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.

COSTS of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run up $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Then come lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussion other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES:

Often times clients will mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department store only charges $25 for an 8×10 or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. According to several articles at the time, did you know that in February 2007 a rather well known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢ “professional” prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough – those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait studios in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your “PORTRAITS” are considered the true “loss leader”.

Going to a chain studio, as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones, “SAY CHEESE” experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand, being well known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism. A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out, rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, how expensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment, software, back ups, etc..

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is a necessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalleled reputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for their business is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations get built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

I hope this (lengthy) article helps shed some light on WHY a custom photographer is a better choice for your family’s memories. The photographs that are produced as a result of the professionalism and dedication that your photographer has will be cherished for a lifetime (or more) and great thought and consideration should be placed into hiring who is right for your family’s most precious investment

the nominations came in, slowly but surely, as the big christmas giveaway contest came to an end...i said to my husband, time after time, how am i EVER going to pick a winner? every persons tragedy feels horrible to them, how can i pick one over another? i stressed about this for a few weeks and then i received an email and instantly it was laid on my heart…i just knew they were the ones that were suppose to win.

On June 25, 2009, Deanna was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. At the age of 34, with a husband and two small children, her world was turned upside down. She had less than 24 hours to prepare for a trip to Pittsburgh which would last most likely 4 to 6 weeks. Explaining this to her young children was no easy task. She ended up being away from her family and home for 6 weeks. When Deanna was able to come home, she ended up having multiple trips back to Pittsburgh for fevers and infections.

Then, in January of 2010, Deanna received news that she was in remission. With this news came a sigh of relief, that the chemotherapy was successful and that she could get back to being the wife, mother, and friend as she was before. Over the next several months she regained most of her strength, started back to work and was living life to the fullest! You would have never known she had just been through five months of vigorous chemo treatments and away from her family. She realized she had a second chance at life...and she was going to live it!

In August of 2010 Deanna noticed bruises again on her body, and immediately realized what it meant. After blood work and a bone marrow biopsy test, she was informed on September 2nd, 2010 that her Leukemia had indeed returned. She was sent to Pittsburgh hospital again for 6 weeks to undergo treatment. She returned on October 13th and was able to spend about a month regaining her strength and spirits before her next trip. She left for Pittsburgh again on November 23rd to undergo more chemo treatments before receiving a bone marrow transplant on November 30th. An amazing blessing was that she had a perfect match from a donor in Europe. With this transplant came the news that she would have to be in Pittsburgh for at least 100 days.

On top of this, Deanna’s employer stopped paying her back in September. So, along with the normal household bills, the family has also paid thousands of dollars to get Deanna through this. Everything from lodging in Pittsburgh, gas money for trips back and forth, parking passes, medical bills, and more, quickly adds up. Her stay this time alone at the family house will cost nearly $8,000. Her friends have done several fundraisers to help them with the costs they’ve incurred so far. But, even once she’s finally able to return home, we’re unsure of how long it will be before she will able to return to work again. It will be a long time before their family rebounds both emotionally and financially from this.

For all tests and treatments, Deanna’s mother Vanessa has been right there in Pittsburgh with her. They have both made so many sacrifices and lost time with their children, grandchildren, and loved ones that they will forever miss.

Deanna will receive a free 1 hour photo session, a 20" x 30" canvas gallery wrap and all the images from the session on a disc. Once we have the session I will share some of the pics here.

Deanna could really use all the prayers ya'all have to offer. Prayer is a wonderful and powerful thing. Please join me in lifting Deanna and her entire family up this holiday season.

i had the absolute pleasure of photographing the wedding of kate & aaron...kate was a gorgeous bride with the most stunning dress...and her family, as always, was a JOY to be around! kate and aaron are soooo in love and it just radiates from them.

their autumn wedding had so many yummy details...autumn is my FAV season, i love every single thing about it...and their wedding perfectly captured it all...fall colors, pumpkins, leaves, warm glowing candles and candy corn...

they also had a "candy bar" of basically any type of candy you could think of...they had little bags there for you to make your own bag of candy...the kidlets LOVED this part!

and this is the "cookie bar"...this is one of my fav parts...there were an insane amount of cookies, seriously, and i'm fairly sure i consumed my weight in cookies...and left with a slight bit of a bellyache BUT it was soooo worth it...kate's aunts are amazing cooks!

last weekend i had an extra early morning senior session with dan...i've known dan's family all my life, we've went to the same church for as long as i can remember...and his mama, oh how i seriously enjoy her company...we have many laughs together...

dan knew EXACTLY what look he was going for with his pictures...and i was totally excited to help him get that look...our shoot was filled with flannel, boots, denim, guns, the american flag and his truck...that just perfectly describes dan!

i had a fab senior session this morning with garrett...he was even a little excited for his session, which was a total yay for me...normally boys are like "eehhh, ok, whatever" so when i actually have one who is even mildly interested in his pictures i am over the moon happy...

this first pic is one of my favs from our session...garrett has this amazing memorial tattoo for his cousin and i think this displays it perfectly...

i had a fabulous senior session last night with catie and her dog tucker...catie wanted nature pictures (which you know i adore) and was pretty much up for anything...she lives in a gorgeous wooded area that had sooooo many amazing spots for pictures...she also wanted tucker to make an appearance too and did he ever...tucker had such a great puppy personality!

catie has such amazing eyes and tucker is just proud as ever...

i am totally excited to be offering christmas mini sessions this year. mini sessions are a great way to get some beautiful images of your family to use for christmas gifts and cards, all at a great mini session rate!

first a few things you may need answers to:

1. what is a "mini session"?
~ it's a 30 minute "real life" outdoor session.

2. where will this session take place?
~ location to be announced a little later :)

3. What can I expect during my mini session?
~ a quick little "get to know you" time between myself and your family
~ a couple of posed shots
~ and as many real life shots as possible- just you and your family hanging out, laughing and having a good ole' time!

4. how many people can be included in our session?
~ 5 people, if your family is larger than that please add $10 per person

5. will you have christmas props for the session?
~ nope, but you are more than welcome to bring along winter wear - hats, scarves, gloves, santa hats, etc...

6. how many images will be taken?
~ as many as I can fit in during that time :)

i had THE sweetest engagement shoot last night with kate & aaron...we did the shoot at kate's uncle's farm, which was amazingly beautiful...everything was perfect from the location to the lighting...

senior session tips

i am coming up on a stretch where i will be doing quite a few senior sessions...and i thought it might be a good idea for me to throw some tips out there for those seniors...

Tip #1…get into it!

show up with an awesomely excited attitude...if you're excited, it shows up on every shot...some of my best photos are from people who can't wait to see their pictures...believe me, if you’re not excited about having your picture taken it will show.

Tip #2…be yourself!!!

while I will help pose you some, don't be afraid to try something different...not every picture needs to be a big smile, they should reflect several aspects of you...when asked to sit for a pose, sit naturally, the same as you would anywhere else...if you feel awkward when i take the picture it will most likely show in the picture..make yourself comfortable and it's OK to move around.

Tip #3…clothing & outfits

all i will say here is basically bring whatever YOU like and whatever YOU are comfortable in...remember you want this pictures to be a direct reflection of who YOU are...bring as many (or as few) outfits as you want.

Tip #4…props

bring your favorite props to the shoot, such as sports equipment if you are a team player or fan, musical instruments or hobby items...you can even bring a favorite portable piece of furniture, such as a lightweight chair or stool...i have a few props i can bring along if you wish (vintage suitcases, antique kitchen chairs)...you can even bring your pet to appear in some of the shots with you if you wish (i love furr babies).

Tip #5...bring someone with you

you are more than welcome to bring a relative or a friend with you if that person can help you relax and take a natural picture...that person can also help with clothing changes and “double check” you while you’re being photographed to make sure your clothing hasn’t taken a turn for the worse or that your hair hasn’t come all undone.

Tip #6…have FUN!!!

the most important part of photo sessions with me is FUN...laugh, talk, throw your own ideas out there... ask and please don't ever be afraid to make suggestions.

if you have pictures of some poses you would like to try, bring them along too.

i had an absolutely fab e-shoot saturday evening with bri & troy...she is sooooooo gorgeous, she made my job easy peasy...just look at these first two pictures, i mean, she was an absolute DREAM to work with!!

we did the shoot at briana's paps old hunting camp...it was just delish with old, faded, peeling wallpaper in different textures and patterns...totally briana's idea (a girl after my own heart) and when she told me i was sooooo excited about it...

don't you just love their dressy outfits against the old walls...

they are such a fun couple and were willing to go along with all my crazy shoot ideas, one of them being balloons...i am in LOVE with the teal balloon against the old peeling wallpaper in the first picture and against the sky in the second picture...

i had a fun, furry, slobbery and energetic shoot last weekend with bella & binx...they were the most wonderful boxers i've ever met.

bella was such a "girl", always willing to sit to get her picture taken...i swear i even saw her smiling a couple times...i am sure she felt pretty and loved having all the attention...

binx needed a little more coaxing (with food) to sit for a picture and did that ever do the trick for him...he sat right down! i loved his energy and all the slobber kisses i got...he is a TRUE sweetheart!

i had a FAB photoshoot on saturday with miss dj...i was so thrilled when it stopped raining in the afternoon, i was worried for we would have to reschedule...we had some drizzle here and there but we just kept on shooting...and it was SO well worth it!!!

this one is BY FAR my favorite...it turned out EXACTLY as i had it pictured in my mind...just gorgeous!!!

just gorgoues again...she has such beautiful eyes...

love the lighting here...and the wind was blowing her hair perfectly...

i had a really awesome senior photoshoot with junior this past week...actually i had two mini-sessions. we did one wednesday night, trying to get it before all the leaves were off the trees and we also did a tiny one yesterday with his dads harley.

you know how excited i was when he stepped out of the car and had on a john deere shirt...i knew right then that we would have a totally FUN photoshoot....

this is one of my absolute favorites from the shoot...from the haybale to the look on his face...

i also had a photoshoot saturday with brenna. she told me at the beginning that she was going to be my toughest subject ever because she hates having her picture taken. she was a FABULOUS subject and took the most beautiful pictures ever...and i think she might of even enjoyed it!

this was one of her favs...so beautiful...

this one is just FUN isn't it...just looking at it makes me smile...

brenna also brought along her bestie elizabeth for some pics...we got some great ones of them together AND i'm fairly sure they had a great time (judging by the giggling and laughing that went on)

i had a fabulous photoshoot saturday with miss madison. the day was just perfect...fall colors, lighting and a slight breeze. the leaves just made THE perfect backdrop! and madison was SO easy to photograph, she was so full of smiles!

i just adore how this black and white picture turned out...so beautiful!

we had a gorgeous day saturday for the wedding of katie and dan. i couldn't believe it after days and days of rain...kerri and i were so so thankful for the weather. and the wedding...ahh it was beautiful! i just adored their black and white color palette.

their sweet daughter ava...so precious!!!

this is my sweet niece natalie...i was so happy to have a little photo session with her when we were in new york visiting family this summer. is there anything more precious than little baby feet?

i had an awesome session with the southerns on a warm summer evening. there were a TON of gnats out that evening...seriously, a TON. i was afraid to even open my mouth to talk for fear one would fly in (ugh...gross). but we were still able to take some awesome pics!

i am officially in absolute love with their dog lucy. like seriously, how cute is she...she was such a total ham and loved having her picture taken as well. don't you just totally love her "bad to the bone" collar?

they have one of THE most beautiful houses i've ever seen...it was a perfect setting for their pictures!

i had a session with this beautiful family on a gorgeous, warm summer evening. we took some pics of the whole crew and then some of just the kids. they were such good sports and just full of smiles.

we had a fabulous setting for the pics...an old icehouse with a nice creek running right beside it. and thank goodness we didn't see any snakes!
